Scope and Importance of Tractor opearted inter - row rotary weeder
In India cotton is one of the most important commercial cash crop. It is very gratifying to note that India has registered the highest growth with regards to cotton production with a share of 21 per cent in global cotton production, which is a giant leap by all imagination. India continued to maintain the largest area under cotton and second largest producer of cotton next to China with 34 per cent of world area. Area under across the world has been sluggish for the past few years. However, production has increased due to sharp rise in yield. In India during year 2012-13, 11.70 million ha area with production of 25 million bales and productivity of 552 kg/ha was recorded.
One of the main reasons for low productivity of cotton in India is the weed infestation as they compete for vital inputs (water, nutrients and sunlight) with main crop. Losses caused by weeds in cotton ranges from 40-45 per cent depending upon nature and intensity of weeds and sometimes it can be as high as 80-90 per cent and can cause total crop failure. Weed control is one of the most expensive and labor-intensive operation in crop production. In India, Rs. 4200 million is being lost annually due to weeds.
Weeding by using hand hoe (kasola) is labor intensive as 300-1200-man h/ha is required during entire crop (2-4 weeding) and labors are not easily available in peak seasons. Traditional methods are costly and time consuming. Effective weeding technique is a main necessity in farming. Use of herbicides will have residual affect and change in the quality of soil. Flaming produces intensive heat and more expensive equipment is needed. Mechanical weeding is preferred to chemical weeding because weedicide application is generally expensive, hazardous and selective. Besides, mechanical weeding keeps the soil surface loose by producing soil mulch which results in better aeration and moisture conversation. The long growth cycle of the crop also passes through frequent rains and the weeds pose a serious problem.
Tractor operated rotary weeder developed by “PUNNI” is reliable, effective, efficient, and ease in operation and most important require zero maintenance.
Main features of Tractor Operated rotary weeder (“PUNNI” Make) are:
The field capacity is in the range of 0.5 to 0.6 ha/h, the saving in cost of operation is 80 to 90 %, time saving 90 % and labour saving 95 to 99 %. over manual hand hoe. The weeding is very effective. The machine is reliable, effective, efficient, and ease in operation. Require zero maintenance.
